Expungements
Erasing Criminal Records
Expungements of criminal records can provide enormous benefits. Expungements are available for minor offenses and more severe offenses. The eligibility for expungement is dependent on a variety of factors—the three most important factors in any expungement petition are:
(1) whether the offense can be expunged [some offenses cannot be expunged];
(2) the passage of time, and
(3) whether a person has been charged or convicted with new offenses after a conviction was entered or probation has been completed.

Petitions for expungement are innately tied to the type of the offense and conviction level. For example, a blemish on your record for a speeding ticket can be expunged much sooner and with less prosecutorial pushback than a felony level offense. The fact of the matter is that there are good people in our society who have made ill-advised choices and received consequences for their actions. A person’s criminal record follows them long after a conviction. Especially with housing and employment, the availability of public access to criminal records means a person’s opportunities and quality of life may suffer long after a criminal conviction.
